The Smith and Rumble Families of England

The Smith family were relative newcomers to the Colony of New South Wales (N.S.W.). The first Smith ancestor to emigrate from England, aboard the “Chimborazo” from London to Sydney, was John Roulston Smith on 20th April 1886. John was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England on 16th December 1849.

His father was John Smith (1816 – 1885), a boot or shoe maker and leather merchant and his mother was Catherine Elizabeth Roulston (1819 – 1899). His parents were born, lived and died in Nuneaton. John and Catherine Elizabeth had four children, Catherine Elizabeth (1845 - 1871), Mary Ann (1847 - 1927), John Roulston (1849 - 1913) and Henry Arthur (1854 - 1925).

It is worth noting that in the Census of 1851, Catherine Elizabeth has an occupation as a scholar which was unusual for a tradesman’s daughter at the time. Ten years later, in the next census, John Roulston is a scholar, together with his brother Henry. Their father obviously saw the value in educating his children.

By 1871, John Roulston started work as a corn merchant’s clerk and had moved to board at 344 East High St., Lincoln, about 120km from Nuneaton. Here he met Florence Rumble, his future wife.

Florence’s father was George Rumble (1820 - 1897), a chemist and druggist who lived all his life in Lincolnshire, England, and her mother was Mary Ann Lavinia Thorne (1827 - 1906) who was born in Exeter, Devon and died in Lincolnshire.

John Roulston and Florence were married in St. Mary le Wigfords Church, Lincoln, England on 29th December 1875.

John Roulston and Florence had six children, Florence Kate (1877 - 1922), Alice Sara (1879 - 1911), Nellie (1880 - 1929), Kate (1881 - 1956), John Henry (1884 - 1940), Millicent (1890 - 1933) and Annie Gladys (1896 - 1976). Kate, John, Millicent and Annie do not appear on the above census as they were born after the census was taken in England or were born in the Colony of N.S.W.
